Management and Prevention of Diabetes

In this paper, three learning and teaching plans are going to be addressed. One teaching plan will be focused on the patient, and the other two will be focused on the family member and staff, respectively. In this case, the learners are at different stages of life, meaning they can prefer different learning methods. The difference in their development stages also means that they have different learning needs. In this lesson, the three learners will learn how to control and manage type 2 diabetes. The paper will also describe the learners, their settings, theoretical framework, assessment, and the importance of picking on this topic.

Describing the Learners

The first learner in this paper is the patient who is living with type 2 diabetes. She is a woman who is currently on a home-based plan of care for her condition. This patient lives with her husband, who is also at risk of developing diabetes because of his age. This lesson is therefore aimed at providing the necessary education for the patient and her husband regarding the management and prevention of type 2 diabetes.

The patient is expected to learn the different ways of managing her own condition and make sure that she overcomes the challenges associated with diabetes. On the other hand, the husband is expected to learn about the different ways of helping his wife to cope with the challenges related to diabetes and also prevent himself from diabetes. This lesson is important to the husband because he is required to learn how to prevent himself and help his lovely wife live a normal life. The other learner, in this case, is the staff member. She is expected to gain knowledge regarding evidence-based ways of managing and preventing diabetes.

Setting

The educational setting represents the environment where the learning process takes place. This environment should be carefully chosen because the learners need to be comfortable when learning. In this lesson, the first learner, who is a woman living with diabetes, will receive education in the comfort of her own home. She will be taught in one of her rooms at home. Notably, there will need to create calmness in the room where the activities will take place. According to Temprano et al. (2020), a familiar environment during the learning process enhances the ability of the learner to acquire knowledge because it protects them against issues of decline in spatial memory. Within the learning room, the windows should be kept open to allow proper air circulation.

The air is crucial as it helps the learner to be relieved of anxiety as well as depression. In an environment with proper air circulation, there is also proper absorption of information by the learners. The room will also be as quiet as possible, which will be necessary to avoid any form of destruction. The husband will also receive his education in the comfort of their home under the conditions like those in the first learner’s environment. However, the third learner will be taught in the conference room at the hospital where she works. It is important to note the fact that the conditions observed in the previous learners’ environment will also be maintained in her room.

Learner Assessment

The first learner is the patient, a 72-year-old woman married. The woman has a history of diabetes. She did not go beyond her secondary school education. The patient was asked some questions to determine her readiness to learn. The questions were mainly to establish how she felt about her condition. From the answers that she provided, it was apparent that she fear for anything that would happen if the condition worsened. This clearly indicated that she was more than willing to do what she had to do to ensure that she made her condition better. When asked about the learning style, she stated that the auditory style can work better for her.

Husband

The second learner was a husband to a patient who was 75- years old. He expressed his feeling towards his lovely wife. He said that he loves his wife and was willing to learn to help her deal with the challenges resulting from the problem of diabetes. He is also willing to learn so that he can prevent himself from developing the problem of diabetes. Most importantly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), anyone who is the age of 45-years-old and above is at risk of developing diabetes. The husband also states that he is comfortable with the auditory learning style.

Staff

The staff member was a woman who is in her 30s. Most importantly, she was in her young adult stage of development. When asked why she thought it necessary for her to engage in this learning program, she expressed her disappointment in how she has been failing to provide the required services to patients who have been coming to the hospital with problems related to diabetes. She said those have been some of the worst moments in her career. Therefore, she wanted to learn about the evidence-based practices that she could apply to help people living with diabetes. Sampedro-Piquero and Begega (2017) state that most people in the young adult stage of development prefer the audiovisual learning style. Therefore, this style was applied in this learner’s learning and teaching process.

Rationale

Diabetes is one of the causes of disability and death in the United States within the United States and elsewhere in the world. Most importantly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) states that about 34.2 million people in the United States have diabetes. Also, over 26.9 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. Among those who are diagnosed, adults make up the larger percentage, where they are about 26.8 million. Therefore, diabetes is becoming one of the major health problems in the United States and addressing issues related to this condition can save the nation of some essential resources. Learning about this condition can help people like the husband to the patient, in this case, avoid developing diabetes. Further, the nation’s productivity is likely to be high when people are healthy.

Teaching Approaches

As seen in the assessment of the learners, it was apparent that they have different learning needs. Two of the learners are in the same development stage, while one is in a different one. The two who are in the same development stage prefer the same learning style, while one who is the staff member prefers a different style of learning. The patient and her husband are old and may be experiencing age-related changes. Notably, some of the changes may interfere with their ability to learn.

Therefore, there will be a need to have an open conversation with them before starting the main activities. They should be told how the lesson will contribute to their well-being. They will also be asked about what they know regarding the management and prevention of diabetes. It is important to understand that people of this age may not be comfortable with repetitions. The other important step in the teaching approach will involve short sessions of learning and teaching. These sessions must involve breaks which enhance the ability of the learner to enhance the learning ability. The learning will involve providing time for the learner to digest the information.

The staff learning process will involve the self-directed learning method. This method is mainly associated with people in this development stage. The self-directed learning style may be achieved by providing the learner with audio and visual materials. These materials will be essential because they will be used to lead the learning process. The learning approach applied in this lesson adheres to Piaget’s learning model. Piaget’s model states that learners must make connections between what they already know and new ideas, which enables the learning process to take place. In this model, the existing knowledge must be modified to accommodate new ideas.

In conclusion, the topic for this lesson is the prevention and management or control of diabetes. The learners in the lesson have different learning needs. The differences are because they both are trying to achieve different goals.
