Mentoring

Mentorship offers many benefits and opportunities for the nursing profession. It is a critical component of the healthcare workforce. One of my previous mentors in my nursing career was a senior nurse who not only helped me in gaining knowledge but also provided sponsorship. She has been writing support letters whenever I need them. She always reminded me to take her as a family member and whenever I experienced any difficulty within the profession she never hesitated to provide the required advice. The other important person in my career who provided mentorship experiences to me was a pain management nurse in one of the hospitals that I worked in at the early stages of the nursing career. She taught me that it doesn’t matter how busy my days will be, the family will always assess my care based on how the patient looks. She always insisted that I should treat patients like family.

Throughout all the mentoring programs that I have ever gone through, there are two methods that my mentors applied. One of these methods is one-on-one mentoring which is a traditional model that involves one mentor and one mentee. This method was mainly used by one of the senior nurses who helped me understand the complexities within the healthcare system. In this type of mentoring, the mentor has more experience in an area that the mentee is interested in, and so can act as an advisor and guide. There was also group mentoring which involves one mentor and several mentees. Practicing mentoring in a group setting also helps improve everybody’s teamwork skills.

Mentorship has been very important in my nursing career as it has been effective in supporting my novice need to feel satisfied as well as successful in my profession. Also, as an experienced nurse, I have been able to get an opportunity to contribute to the profession because of the experiences in my mentorship programs.
