Motivation is a crucial factor to be considered when choosing the right workplace. Motivation is defined as “the desire to achieve or maintain a level of arousal that is optimal for a particular goal.” It can be thought of as internal factors that motivate people to perform their best, such as self-esteem or intrinsic interest in the task at hand. External factors are those which are outside of the individual’s control but can still impact how motivated you feel about your work.

Most importantly, it is worth noting that healthcare workers had a median age of 32 years old and were mostly female (81%), with most being employed in rural areas (77%) (Muthuri et al., 2020). The most common reasons for leaving hospital employment were poor pay (72%) or poor working conditions (56%) (Muthuri et al., 2020). The study also found that low wages and poor working conditions were correlated with dissatisfaction with work.

The article first defines motivation as the drive to achieve goals and is an important factor in the performance of healthcare workers (Muthuri et al., 2020). Their findings suggest that there are specific factors that influence motivation, and these include job satisfaction, work-family interference, work-life balance, organizational support for employees, flexible work arrangements, and a positive work environment.

The study also found that, although many factors could influence a person’s motivation, the most important were job satisfaction and perceived difficulty of work (Muthuri et al., 2020). Job satisfaction was associated with overall job satisfaction, which in turn was associated with staff retention rates and staff burnout rates. This study shows that there needs to be more focus on improving employee satisfaction as a means of improving employee motivation and productivity within the healthcare field. These findings provide evidence that organizations can use these factors to improve employee performance.

In conclusion, motivation is one of the most important factors in healthcare delivery. Most importantly, motion can be described as the willingness of healthcare professionals to do what is required in achieving healthcare goals. The article reviewed was mainly aimed at finding the determinants of motivation within the healthcare systems of the East African Community. It is found that the determinants of motivation can be found at the individual level, organizational, and societal ones. Therefore, motivation starts with the healthcare professionals themselves.
